Q. How do donations to the LAO work? What is the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation?
A. Since the LAO is not a 501C3 non-profit, we needed to ally with one. We first approached the Leelanau School, that was not legally advised. We found the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation which was set up to help with Community Giving. We have had some frequent questions: Interest earned varies with the economy.
1. What is the Annual Fund?
This is a managed fund that has a 1.7% fee that earns around 2.4% interest . So it is balanced to give a little more than what you give annually to the Leelanau School.
2. What is the Endowed Fund?
This is a managed fund that has a 1.7% fee that earn around 8.0% interest .The Principle can not be touched. For Michigan donors, it allows a tax credit of which means a $400 donation would cost a couple $88. This mean a 455% leverage in giving. For Donors in other States your IRS tax bracket is your deduction. So a 28% bracket would mean a 139% leverage with a $400 donation costing $288 out of pocket.
3. Will all my donation go to the cause to help Leelanau?
Yes. In fact more than what you give will go to Leelanau. The LAO can not use any of the GTRCF Funds as it is not a 501C3. This is one reason we count on membership fees for support.
4. Can I give direct to the Leelanau School?
Yes. Either way the funds are intended for the Leelanau School.
5. Can I give direct to the Leelanau Alumni Organization?
Yes. However since we are not a 501C3 at this time, your donation is non-deductible.
We would use these funds for operations.
6. Why should I give?
With the high cost of a Leelanau Education, families need scholarship assistance.
Leelanau offers a beautiful setting in which to learn in. The total teaching reaches out to all the five senses to facilitate learning for all students no matter what personal challenges that they may have.
